A society is an association of several parties brought together by a mutual accord to decide, govern and act in co-operation for a collective purpose. Societies are generally created for the betterment of charitable activities like education, music, sports, religion, culture, sports, and others. Society Registration is governed by The Society Registration Act, India.
This act was implemented with the aim to augment the legal stipulations of a society’s registration for the betterment of fields such as science, literature, fine arts, or the creation of awareness regarding several fields. The Society Registration Act, 1860 is accepted by many state governments with or without any further amendments.
The Aim of a Society Registration
A society can be created for the betterment of fine education, science, fine arts, literature, for the distribution of impactful knowledge or various charitable purposes in political education. According to Section 20 of The Society Act, 1860, a society can be created for the following purposes.
- Advancement of fine arts
- Imparting political education
- Providing a cause charitable assistance
- Advancement of science and literature
- Opening military orphan funds
- Restoration and maintenance or the founding of art galleries or public museums
- Restoration and maintenance or the founding of reading rooms or libraries
- Advancement or distribution of skilled knowledge
- Collecting natural history
- Collecting mechanical or philosophical inventions, designs, and instruments
Documents Required And Procedure
All of the said documents are required to be submitted to the Registrar of Societies with the prescribed fees in 2 copies. Upon receipt of the application, the registrar will sign the first copy as acknowledgment to return it to the said party, while retaining the second for approval. On verification and vetting of the documents, the registrar will issue the Incorporation Certificate and allot a registration number to the Society.
The signed Charter and Memorandum, have to be filed with the concerned society or registrar of state with the prescribed fee. If the registrar is satisfied with the application, then they will certify the registration of the Society.
