    An Import Export (IE) Code is the registration necessary for people importing or exporting goods and services from or to India. The IE Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries by the Government of India. An IE Code application has to be sent to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade along with the required documents. Upon submission of this application, the DGFT will issue an IE Code to the entity in 15 to 20 business days, or less.

    How Long Is An IE Code Valid For?

    The IE Code registration of an entity is valid for the lifetime of its operation as it is permanent in nature, as long as it is renewed yearly, between April to 30th June.

    Who Are Exempted From The IE Code Registration?

    There are exceptions to the entities and businesses that are required to have an IE registration to conduct import or export as mentioned below:

    • Importer and export carried out by the Central Government, agencies, undertakings for defense, or any other specified lists under the Foreign Trade (exemption from the application of Rules in certain cases) Order, 1993.
    • The import and export of goods for personal usage.

    How To Apply for An IE Code

    According to the amended provisions of Paragraph 2.08 of the Handbook of Procedure contains provisions relating to the application for IE Code- Vide public notice no. 27/2015-2020 dated 8th August 2018, the procedure to file for registration of an IE Code is:

    • Exporters and importers need to file an online application in Form ANF-2A.
    • The applicant needs to submit two documents which are a proof of address and a canceled cheque or bank certificate with the printed name of the entity.

    Documentation At A Glance

    A Digital Photograph of dimensions 3×3 cm of the Sole Proprietor, Managing Partner, Designated Partner, Managing Director, Karta, Trust Secretary or Trust Signatory Applicant.

    A copy of their PAN card of the sole proprietor or entity.

    A copy of the Passport of the said parties in point number 1 (The first & last page) OR any one of the following:

    • Voter’s I-Card
    • Driving Licence
    • UID (Aadhar card)

    Sale deed in the case of the business premise being self-owned OR one of the following:

    • A copy of the rental or Lease Agreement in the case of a rented/leased office
    • The latest electricity or telephone bill, not older than 2 months from the date of registration

    The Bank Certificate of the parties mentioned in point number 1. as per ANF 2A(I), or a cancelled cheque holding the pre-printed name of said party and their A/C No.

    Registration number of the:

    • Registered partnership (Partnership Deed)
    • Company (Certificate of Incorporation)
    • Trust or society (Registration or Trust Deed)

    Note: Point 6 of documentation does not apply to Sole proprietors and HUF.
